Shijian Kenpo is a very "balanced" system. Although it is primarily a striking system, it deals extensively with grappling concepts and submissions.

Classes for Adults

There are two programs offered at The Academy of Martial Arts. Our Gracie Jiu-Jitsu classes deal with the grappling or "on-the-ground" aspect of combat, while our Shijian Kenpo Karate classes provide realistic instruction in striking. There is some overlap as both programs deal extensively with takedowns and counter grappling.

Adult classes are physically more demanding than the kids programs. The classes are longer and the workout portion of the classes is more intense. At the same time, students are encouraged to do things at their own pace.

Our students are all friends. They work together as a team to improve the skill levels of everyone in the class. You will find that whether you are in a karate or Jiu-Jitsu class, the other students are willing to share what they know and help you reach your potential. When students train like this, it raises the quality and skill level of everyone involved.

Adult classes are also an amazing way to get in shape. Students are often concerned about their conditioning when they first start training. There's no need to be concerned because you feel out of shape. That is what beginning classes are all about. By far, most students feel out of shape for the first few weeks or months. But that changes as you train In fact, many of our students lose a lot of weight in the first few months. It is not a rare thing to hear some students talk about losing 30-40 pounds before earning their first couple belts..
