"Preventing a False Sense of Security"
One of the greatest benefits of the martial arts is the self-confidence and skill that can come through hard work and dedication. But that confidence should be rooted in skill and abilities. Few things can be more discouraging to a student than quickly moving through belts, being filled with a sense of safety and confidence, and then finding themselves in a serious situation and discovering that all those self-defense techniques they they learned don't help them one bit in a real life situation.
There used to be a popular idea that all you had to do to defeat a black belt, was get him on the ground. Unfortunately this was largely true. With a properly trained Shijian student, this simply isn't the case. Shijian students learn to deal with striking, grappling, submissions, and almost every other conceivable kind of attack.
No one is invincible and nothing works 100% of the time. What Shijian does is improve the skill level of every student, every time they attend a training session. Students are very proficient on their feet or on the ground. |
